The Myth of the North

The Myth of the North celebrates the vibrancy, humour and unique identify of the region is packed full of work by famous photographers including; Bill Brandt, Humphrey Spender, John Davies, Martin Parr and Shirley Baker. Art, Design and Photography Summer Show

The summer art show of A2 students work at Long Road Sixth Form College will be this weekend.

The private view is on Friday 22nd June and all students and their families are welcome to attend. The evening is from 6.30pm - 9.30pm and features bar, bar-b-que and live music for acclaimed local band Poontang.

There will be a fashion show at 7.30pm in the college grounds.

On Saturday 23rd June the show is open for public viewing between 10am - 4pm.

Tate Britain Exhibiton - UPDATE

I went to see this exhibition over half-term and it is FANTASTIC!

All AS Photography students who are planning to carry onto A2 MUST go and see it!!

For everyone else, it has one of the best ranges of British photography that I have ever seen on display.

From W H Fox Talbot, Julia Margaret Cameron, Roger Fenton, Hill and Adamson through to contemporary photographers such as Simon Norfolk, Martin Parr plus many new names.

This exhibition is highly recommended - highlights for me were the colour photographs by Madame Yevonde (Room 3) and actual prints on display from David Bailey's Box of Pin Ups (Room 4).

It aims to show the diversity of subjects, concepts, styles and techniques explored by photo-based artists from documentary work to conceptual art photography, as well as image combined with media such as audio, video, and installation. photo-london will provide a unique platform to highlight the latest international trends and expressions available in the medium of photography.

This is the first major exhibition of photography ever to be held at Tate Britain. It takes a unique look at the journey of British photography, from the pioneers of the early medium to today’s photographers who use new technology to make and display their imagery.

Well worth checking out if you are in London - this is a fantastic series of images by Nick Danzige documenting Tony Blair at the start of the war in Iraq. Documentary photography undoubtedly at its best! In particular look out for the climbing frame in the garden of No.10.

Enter_Unknown Territories New Technology Art Festival is in Cambridge this month.

From Wednesday 25th April - Sunday 29th April a variety of events will take place.

Three international artists have been commissioned to produce interactive art projects.

One project focuses on surveillance, "(re)collector" and will use CCTV footage gathered throughout Cambridge.

James Coupe and the team behind this project will be holding an educational talk on Wednesday 25th April at 4.15pm in the Lecture Theatre RUS203, Ruskin Gallery, Anglia Ruskin University, East Road, Cambridge - to which all sixth form students are invited.

Berlin Exhibition
Just put up at Long Road Sixth Form College is an exhibition of photographs taken on the trip to Berlin in October 2006. Featuring work from the staff and students who took part on the trip - there really is an amazing collection of images on display!

Take A View - Landscape Photographers of the Year 2007

A new landscape photography competition boasting a £10,000 first prize has been launched in the UK.
Take a View - the UK Landscape Photographer of the Year awards are being run in association with the AA, and are the brainchild of one of Britain's top landscape photographers, Charlie Waite.
The competition has four categories with a total prize fund of £20,000. The best images will feature in an exhibition at the National Theatre in September, as well as in a book to be published by the AA.
Waite explains: 'I am hoping that Take a View will endure for many years to come and that it will ultimately result in a sort of Doomsday book of the landscape in the UK, resulting in a collection of images which will serve as both a wonderful visual record and an expression of our nation's response to the landscape around them.'
The deadline for entries is 31 May, and details on how to enter are available at http://www.take-a-view.co.uk/.

Eugene Atget at Victoria & Albert Museum

Temporary display in gallery 38a, 29 January - 22 July 2007. Admission free

Eugène Atget (1857-1927) took up photography as a professional in the late 1880s. Details of his earlier life are shadowy. He is known to have been a sailor and then an amateur actor, which may account for the 'stage set' quality of many of his images. He seems to have lived a largely secluded life in his apartment in Paris.

Bound for Glory, America in Colour 1939-1943

This is a fantastic exhibition at The Photographers Gallery in London on until 28th January of images from the 1940s.
During this time, photographers were employed by
the FSA (Farm Security Administration) to garner
support for President Franklin D Roosevelt’s New Deal
by revealing the poverty of primarily rural America.
The initial black and white images were intended to
educate the wider population about the problem. Then
from 1939 colour photographs were taken to show the
improvements the New Deal had made, whilst
acknowledging that there was still work to be done.
These startling images were made possible by the
newly developed Kodachrome colour film.

This year's Portrait Prize is now on at the National Portrait Gallery along with an excellent range of portrait photography. The Portrait Prize is on until 18th February 2007.

The competition is with www.itsmymarket.com and is called beautifull Cambridgeshire. The winning shot will be of anything within the Cambridgeshire area that is deemed to fit the bill of Beautifull Cambridgeshire.

In the Face of History: European Photographers in the 20th Century
Until 26 January 2007 at the Barbican, London.

From the First World War to the Cold War, the sexual revolution to the Velvet Revolution, communism to capitalism, the 20th Century was marked by sweeping historical events and changes. In the Face of History brings together the work of many of the greatest photographers of this period, whose works collectively map out a century of European experience.One of the first major exhibitions to chart European photography from 1900 to the present day, In the Face of History features classic photographers such as Eugène Atget, Josef Sudek and Brassaï , alongside contemporary artists such as Boris Mikhailov, Jitka Hanzlová and Wolfgang Tillmans. The exhibition inlcudes a number of photographers from the former Eastern bloc, with many works shown in the UK for the first time. All of the photographers are distinguished by a closeness to their subject matter, sometimes depicting these subjects during times of great conflict. André Kertész documented the realities of a soldier’s life while serving in the Austro Hungarian army in the Great War. Henryk Ross, meanwhile, is represented by a series of shocking images which he took in secret while imprisoned in the Lodz ghetto in Poland during World War Two. Other photographers depict subtler currents of social and cultural change. Christer Strömholm lived amongst, and documented, a community of transsexuals in Paris in the 1960s. Annelies Štrba shows photographs of her children’s lives taken over a thirty year period. In the Face of History contains many powerful works, images distinguished by the emotional bond between photographer and subject, offers a unique perspective on a century, as seen through the eyes of some of Europe’s greatest photographers.

New Exhibition - opens this week.
Twilight: Photography in the Magic Hour

This exhibition focuses on eight contemporary artists whose photography and installations are made at, or suggest, the fleeting state of the world at dusk. It explores a time of day and a quality of light that presents technical challenges but also embodies a haunting mood and the possibility of narrative intrigue or psychological tension.
At twilight, the colour and quality of light go through rapid and dramatic changes. For photographers, who are highly attuned to the subtleties of light, this is a particularly significant and poignant time. The artists in the exhibition have all made work that focuses on the end of the day and investigates twilight, as distinct from night.
Their grouping shows a variety of approaches to the theme. Each artist is guided by the quality of twilight in the place where they work and by the wider social issues, cultural resonances and poetic possibilities of the magic hour.
