Brazilian photographer Sebastiao Salgado has become well known for his epic images of people living on the margins. He trained as an economist before being captivated by photography and has concentrated on major projects focusing on workers, migration and now the environment. He tells Carrie Gracie that he uses his pictures to tell the bigger story of the social changes of our time.

Political Landscapes at Magnum Print Room, London

Over the years Magnum Photos and it's photographers have explored the notion of landscape photography, from the 'Magnum Landscape' publication (Phaidon 1997) to more recent and personal projects by photographers such as Carl De Keyzer and Stuart Franklin.This exhibition seeks to take the concept one step further by specifically highlighting issue-based material both from our archive and from contemporary projects. These self-contained compositions contrast with traditional journalistic narrative, yet represent the same passion for recording the political nature of our engagement with the world.

Andre Kertesz "On Reading" at The Photographer's Gallery

I chose to go to The Photographers’ Gallery in London to view the exhibition of Andre Kertesz’ work called “On Reading”. All the photographs shown were taken between 1915 and 1980, spanning most of his career; they were taken in many of the different places that he lived, including Argentina, France, Hungary, USA and the UK. I chose to see this exhibition as I am interested mainly in traditional photography, rather than digital, and was intrigued to see how his techniques of shooting and printing may have altered the effect of his images, making them more successful than others.
The range of photographs in this exhibition was interesting as they were all different sizes, none of them printed bigger than A4. This made the viewer have to get very close to the image to see the smaller details. I also enjoyed how the photographs were collected throughout his career; I thought it was a shame that they were not displayed in chronological order, yet the techniques that he used had definitely developed as he became more practised at using a camera, and seemed to get more settled in finding his own personal style. This span of time across the photographs was also affected by the events at the time that the image was taken; many were taken during the war, which made a difference in the areas that Kertesz photographed, and the people who were around to be photographed.
I found this exhibition particularly intriguing as I find it interesting how people are influenced by books and the type of literature that they read; these images showed how all sorts of people in all sorts of places have read books. It was fascinating how the time that the photograph was taken is imminent in the image due to the clothes that the subjects are wearing, and the surroundings that they are in. This collection of images ranged from those set-up and posed, and those using the decisive moment, with more of a photojournalist feel. Many of the images made the viewer feel like a voyeur, the model unaware of the picture being taken.
Overall, I really enjoyed this exhibition as I felt that it truly celebrated the pleasure of reading, and combined it with the artistic force of photography; it was also the first time I have seen Kertesz’ work exhibited, which I found interesting as he is said to be one of the most influential photographers of the twentieth century.

Tripods for Sale

1. Manfrotto 390
Alumininium (I think), weight ~1.5kg, closed height 58cm, extended height 160cm, 4 section screw tighten legs, integral 3 way pan-tilt head. I don't have the load bearing, but it will take a medium-format SLR and probably even a large format. I've used this as a "studio" tripod since it fairly heavy and bulky. It doesn't have a cover but I have the original box.

2. Manfrotto digi-718SHB
Aluminium, weight ~1.0kg, closed height 40cm, extended height 125cm. 4 section lever-tighten legs, integral 3 way pan-tilt head. The load bearing is less than the 390, but will comfortably take my Bronica 645. Comes with carry case.
This is more worn; one scratch, and most of the non-essential rubber finishes (feet etc) have been lost. Great for shooting outdoors because of the light weight and small size but a lowish extended height

Majority Report: America, Amateur Photography and the Internet Curated by Roger Hargreaves | 2 September - 2 October 2009

FREE exhibition at the Margaret Harvey Gallery, St Albans. Majority Report presents a selected snapshot of the state of amateur photography in the digital age through a photographic narrative of America at a pivotal moment. It questions our assumptions about the nature of amateur photography at a time when the private is becoming public and when journalism has become the domain of the citizen. The exhibition draws together photographs taken in America and posted on the image hosting website Flickr. Since its inception in 2004 the site has developed into a complex depository of over three billion images that mark a diverse range of agendas and photographic strategies.

Exhibition of John Gay at Guildhall Art Gallery, City of London

Seventy five photographs of post-war England and iconic views of London feature in this major exhibition which marks the centenary of John Gay’s birth. Drawn from English Heritage’s extensive collection of photographs, the exhibition presents a wide range of images of people, buildings, animals and landscapes taken by Gay between the mid-1930s and 1990s.

The Times/Canon Young Photographer of the Year

The Times has launched the eighth edition of its Young Photographer of the Year competition, which in partnership with Canon will see the winner receive more than £3000 worth of kit and one-on-one training with the newspaper's staff photographers.

The contest calls for photographers aged 18 to 26 residing in the UK or Ireland to submit one image for each of the three categories - lifestyle, portraiture and reportage.

Heather Angel interview on Radio 4

Heather Angel has spent the last 30 years photographing some of nature's most spectacular sights. Be it storks hunting locusts in burning bushes, or a polar bear breaking wind, her photographs capture the unusual and unexpected. She has been described as 'the doyenne of wildlife photography', and has photographed the Prince of Wales in his wild flower meadow at Highgrove. But her latest project brings her home as she explores the wildlife on offer at Kew. She spent a year creating a book of photographs that challenge the perception that Kew is just about plants. She joins Jenni to talk about her exhaustive career.

Fay Godwin on Radio 4 on Tuesday 30th June at 11.30am.

Christine Finn discovers a rich seam of literary life in photographer Fay Godwin's work.

Best known for her later landscape work, Godwin spent the 1970s and 80s taking portraits of some of the leading figures of the literary scene. Many iconic book-jacket images were taken by her, including a sultry Ted Hughes with that lock of hair falling over his face, Philip Larkin and the rubber plant, Seamus Heaney and the tree, Desmond Morris in a safari suit, a pensive Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, Keith Waterhouse slumped in a basket chair and Salman Rushdie with a hookah.

Christine gained access to Godwin's home and studio as it was being prepared for sale, and with Godwin's friend, photographic historian Roger Taylor, examined the archive. It shows that many of Godwin's later collaborations on books of landscapes - most notably with Ted Hughes, but also with Richard Ingrams and Philip Larkin - were born in the portrait sittings and the relationships that grew out of them.

The programme also hears from poet Alan Brownjohn about the experience of sitting for Fay, and examines an archive of prints, contact sheets and letters from her sitters, held in the British Library since her death in 2005, with photo critic and editor Sue Steward.
