How to Photograph Fireworks

Summary on a digital compact camera:

Use a tripod (one of those mini tripods is ideal for this - Poundland currently doing them for a bargain £1!!

Use Fireworks option if you have it

If not - use the lowest ISO you can, the longest shutter speed you can and a two second self-timer

Summary on a digital SLR camera:

Use a tripod (not a Poundland one)

Use Manual mode (M)

Select 5 second shutter speed (you can try others)

Select the lowest ISO you can - 100 or 200

Use an aperture of f10 or smaller (eg f11, f16)

Use a remote release (if you don't have one use the 2 second self-timer)

Summary on a film camera:

Use a tripod

Use a slow film (FP4 for example)

Use 'B' mode for the shutter speed and expose for approx. 5 seconds

Use an aperture of f11 or f16

All cameras:

Framing and viewpoint

Try and get above the crowd.

Think about having a foreground interest - crowd, building etc

Lens

Use a wide angle lens to ensure that you can capture the area of the sky that the fireworks exploding

Flash

Turn off!!!

If you don't have a tripod

Then use a surface to rest your camera on - bench, wall etc

Using the self-timer will help to ensure that the camera is as steady as possible

The recent protests in Tehran have been both passionate and violent, but this is not the first time such scenes have unfolded.

Camille Silvy was a pioneer of early photography and one of the greatest French photographers of the nineteenth century. This exhibition includes many remarkable images which have not been exhibited since the 1860s.

Ex-Long Road Students visit

Two former A Level Photography students visited Long Road to speak about their experiences at becoming photographers.

Both Brendan Berry and James Thomson graduated last year from the prestigious Documentary Photography course at Newport, University of Wales.

Both students spoke about their recent work and projects at university. They then spoke individually to current students about their work, giving advice and tips.

Photography Trip
We are planning an A2 visit to two major photographic exhibitions in London, on Wednesday 14th July. The cost is £17 plus £12.50 for the meal in the evening at Wong Kei's Restaurant. Letters can be collected from the Photography Office and need to be returned to the Finance Office by Friday 25th June at the latest.

EXPOSED at Tate Modern, presents 250 works by celebrated artists and photographers. The exhibition explores a range of different imagery from the nineteenth century to the present day. This includes different forms of covert photography, hidden cameras and images taken without the knowledge of the subject. Surveillance is a key theme running through the exhibition. Some of the work will challenge the viewer.

Highlights include iconic images from Brassai, Walker Evans, WeeGee, Philip-Lorca di Corcia, Nan Goldin, Guy Bourdin, Man Ray, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Lee Miller,Helmut Newton among others.

The Family and the Land

The work of American photographer Sally Mann is deeply rooted in both her family and the landscape she lives and works in. This exhibition at the Photographers' Gallery, draws on several powerful photographic series from throughout her long career.
